"Well, what a turn-up for the books! Looks like a welcoming party. Flowers everywhere, roses, carnations and lilies… I love lilies, though Gary used to say they smell like a funeral parlour. Cards from well-wishers… The house smells nice. Got rid of that stench of piss and puke. Somebody’s done a deep clean while I was away"

The Apple Tree
or Bobi ap Bryn and the Birds of Rhiannon,
written and narrated by Rosalind Buck (c) 2023
Duration roughly 12 minutes
"There were three birds sitting in amongst the branches. As they fluttered from bough to bough, they seemed to twinkle and shine, reflecting the light and splitting it into many colours, like a raindrop or a dragonfly’s wing. The birds sang together in harmony and counterpoint, piping and whistling, their melodies twining in and out of one another as if weaving the weft and warp of a mantle made from music"

She sat down with a sigh on a stump and started to eat her bit of bread and cheese. Suddenly, she heard someone clearing their throat. It sounded like a whole classroom of children scraping their chairs back.
“I suppose you know you are sitting on my doorstep,” said a voice. It was a voice with boils on it.

Duration roughly 11 minutes
It gathers itself and begins to swell, drawing sustenance from the earth above, drinking, quenching its ancient thirst. In a slow, drawn-out yawn it pushes at its confines. Downwards, its stiff knees unfolding, rejoicing in the exquisite ecstasy of straightening and unfurling. Upwards, gently but surely, pushing, pushing, stretching its horny hands with infinite patience and perseverance, with unquestioning conviction towards the unseen but undeniable light
